Josh

Josh is a major character from The Good Samaritan. He is the son (and assistant) of the Jerichan (?) innkeeper Gaal.

It is unknown why Josh doesn't have a mother.

Josh is voiced by the late Lisa Paulette.

Role in Short[]

One night, Josh's father Gaal pours a kind of brown soup into a bowl and sends Josh to give it to one of two men in the corner. Unaware that the specific man, Kish, is counting money, which he hides, Josh gives him his soup. Kish thanks him and ruffles his hair. Nabad adds thanks of his own and pinches his cheek. Angrily, Kish slaps Nadab's hand, calling him a fool because Josh hadn't brought him his bowl yet. Upon realizing this, Nadab demands his bowl. Josh promises he'll bring it now.

Josh is about to bring Nadab his soup when he overhears him and Nadab talking about robbing. He hears Kish discuss a new plan: to start robbing the travelers before they reach Jericho and therefore get all their gold before they spend anything here at the inn. When Nadab asks if he can still mash the travelers, and Kish tells him mashing the travelers dead is his job, Josh gets shocked to the point of spilling a little of the soup and running back to his father.

After a fight by Nadab to Kish for calling him dumb, Gaal throws a cleaver onto the robbers' table and orders them to get out, as he won't have any thieves or robbers there. Nadab breaks the cleaver's blade, takes a dagger with a crooked blade out of his clothes, stabs the table, and growls at them. Gaal tells Josh to run and get the soldiers. A panicky Kish protests any soldiers and forces a still-hungry Nadab out of the inn. Josh runs back to hug his father, telling him he was scared. Gaal comfortingly assures Josh that the robbers won't cause any harm there in Jericho, but expresses pity for whoever travels alone on the road from Jerusalem the next day.

At the inn the next night, when Caleb, a good Samaritan, brings a wounded Jewish merchant named Ezra into Gaal's inn and calls for help, Gaal pushes dishes off the table for Caleb to lay Ezra, and then sends Josh to quickly fetch hot water and clean rags, which he does. Josh glares angrily at the Priest and Levite, particularly for resenting Caleb (just because he's a Samaritan). Upon his father's command, Josh makes a bed for Ezra by the fireplace to keep him warm. He tells Caleb Ezra was lucky he [Caleb] came along.

The next morning, Josh helps Ezra drink from a bowl, but then a soldier brings Kish and Nadab (tied up in ropes), asking Ezra if they're the men who had attacked and robbed him. Ezra confirms it. Kish accuses Ezra of lying, but Nadab tells Kish he mashed him ten times, as told. Kish yells in Nadab's face, and the soldiers take them away. Josh expresses satisfaction that they won't be robbing anymore. He glares at the Levite for resenting a Samaritan, and then walks in mockery when the Priest tells Gaal to be more careful whom he allows to stay in his inn. Gaal clears his throat, as if to say that's not allowed.

Once Caleb pays the innkeeper all he can for now, Caleb wishes peace unto the innkeeper and his son, which Josh himself returns.
